Digital Art Fair Asia Artist Spotlight — Szabotage

As the official NFT sponsor of Digital Art Fair Asia 2021, we want to continue highlighting some of the best artists to showcase their incredible work at the upcoming festival.

Below is our next featured artist Q&A — Szabotage. Enjoy!

How did you find art? Or did art find you?

I’ve always been creating. I painted murals in primary school, and my schoolmates (when we were small) paid me ten pence to draw tattoos on them at the back of class. I studied architecture, so I would say it’s in me, it’s the way I think.

So, why NFTs?

I got involved with NFTs back in September 2020, after one of my collectors, Benjamin Rameau, taught me all about NFTs.

I have always been very open to new ideas and ways of doing things. I nearly always say yes to new opportunities. As part of my architectural training I was a 3D visualizer, so I often design digitally. This is a journey for me and I feel I am just at the beginning, as I am now focusing a lot more of my time on my digital creations.

I was the first urban artist in Hong Kong to offer NFTs, dropping November 2020 on OpenSea, and I am excited to continue this journey.

What is your medium and why?

I use a variety of materials and processes in each physical artwork, but my fascination is harnessing the spray can. I am captivated by its chaotic temperament and versatility, and how it demands focus to control its output.

My DAFA 21 NFT collection is all about combining my physical practise with my digital and I felt like the fair was a great place to be able to share these works.

I am experimenting with bridging the gap between the two realms, with the physical artwork informing the creative process of the digital.

Some of my pieces, for example ‘Minted’ — the physical piece was created with the intention of becoming the digital NFT animation. The layers of the painting are in the digital NFT. This intention allowed me to have fun with sound and motion, two areas that extend the creativity off the canvas. The whole endeavour brings attention to how we view and value art, for what purpose we consume it, and how we display and share it.

About Szabotage

Hailing from Shoreditch, London, Szabotage — whose real name is Gustav Szabo — is a prolific contemporary urban artist. A former architect and designer, the multifaceted artist relocated to Hong Kong, where he became active in the street art scene and gained notoriety in the local and international urban art world.

Szabotage works with a variety of techniques and mediums, with his body of work ranging from canvas portraits, prints, interiors, cars, sculptures, stencils and NFTs. The artist constantly challenges typical canvas limitations through upcycling and recycling, and creates sculptures using deconstructed aerosol cans, metals and wood.

The artist is best recognised by his signature Koi fish — an iconic symbol of strength, adversity and good fortune — which features frequently throughout his work.

Szabotage has painted for the HKWalls street art festival, was a finalist in the global phenomenon Secret Walls, and gave the TEDX talk, ‘Resilience is the Ultimate High’. The artist held his first London solo exhibition ‘SHHH Women’s Erotic Emporium,’ in Shoreditch, London. Since then, he has exhibited internationally, with sold out exhibitions, solo shows, and numerous collaborative projects, commercial and private commissions.
